Every trader knows they should size their stops based on volatility. Most traders know ATR is the right tool for that. But almost nobody is looking at the ATR from the right timeframe.
If you're trading M15, the M15 ATR shows you how noisy the last 14 fifteen-minute candles were. That's not what you need. You need to know how much the market is actually moving on an hourly or daily basis â because that's the volatility environment your trade lives and dies in. As the side-by-side chart makes clear, the M15 ATR line is jagged and reactive, while the H4 ATR line is smooth, structured, and far more useful as a sizing reference.
MTF ATR gives you the volatility reading that actually matters.
Set your reference timeframe, attach the indicator, and the H1 â or H4, or D1 â ATR is always displayed in your sub-window, updating in real time. The current value is printed in the header. You always know exactly how volatile the market is on the timeframe your trade is exposed to, and you can size your stops, targets, and position accordingly.
What makes MTF ATR particularly powerful is the ability to run it across multiple timeframes simultaneously. When the H1 ATR and the H4 ATR are both rising at the same time, you have cross-timeframe confirmation of genuine volatility expansion â a much stronger signal than either reading alone. When H4 ATR is compressing while M15 ATR spikes, you know the higher timeframe is in consolidation and the lower timeframe noise is misleading â context that protects you from entering the wrong trade at the wrong time.
âĻ Higher timeframe ATR, always on screen â no chart switching, no second window, no manual calculation
âĻ Live ATR value in the header â current reading updates with every tick, always visible
âĻ Macro and micro volatility combined â higher TF for sizing context, lower TF for entry precision
âĻ Cross-timeframe confirmation â signals confirmed on multiple timeframes are significantly more reliable
âĻ Any timeframe combination â H1 ATR on M15, D1 ATR on H4, or any pairing you need
âĻ Three inputs, instant setup â timeframe, period, shift â nothing else required
âĻ Perfect for stop-loss and take-profit sizing â base your levels on real volatility, not lower timeframe noise
Whether you're setting stops, confirming breakout conditions, or managing position size â MTF ATR ensures your volatility reference always comes from the timeframe that reflects the market environment your trade is actually operating in.
"Size your stops with the volatility that matters â not the noise."
How It Works (Corrected Version)
The indicator calculates ATR on the selected reference timeframe (default: 1 Hour) using a configurable period, then plots it as a continuous single blue line in a dedicated sub-window below the main price chart.
The sub-window header displays the active configuration and current value in real time (e.g. MTF ATR(14) H1 0.099), showing the live ATR reading from the reference timeframe at a glance. The ATR line visually peaks during high-volatility periods and troughs during low-volatility periods, allowing you to immediately see whether the market is expanding or contracting on the higher timeframe â regardless of what the lower timeframe bars are doing.
For example, as seen on the USDJPY M15 chart with H1 ATR displayed, the ATR sub-window shows a clear volatility spike around June 18 â peaking sharply above 0.20 â that corresponds precisely with the explosive upward price move visible on the main chart during the same period. Before and after that spike, the ATR line compresses back toward 0.04â0.10, confirming that the H1 volatility environment returned to a low-activity phase. This gives traders on the M15 chart an immediate, quantified read on whether the hourly market is in an active trending phase or a quiet consolidation â critical context for sizing stops and targets appropriately.
